The Northfleet owners had previously brought suit against the Murillo pounds or 22, dollars, but it was changed to a suit to be brought against the owners instead of the ship. The usual course of action in such cases was to arrest a vessel, and require bail to be given to answer the claim before the ship was released. Knowles replied, refuting the charge, which indeed appears to have been groundless, and other pamphlets followed. Again, in , Crookshanks brought a similar but more scurrilous charge against Knowles's secretary, the judge advocate at his trial, who retaliated by publishing in extenso the minutes of the court-martial.
